What is and why should
register a domain on Internet?
Domain is a name used to localize and identify computer
sets on Internet. Computers, and why not to say sites,
are identified by numbers. Nevertheless it won’t
make sense to memorize that 200.255.108.6 is the identification
from a certain enterprise site on Internet. Instead
and to make localization easier to the visitors, a name
is registered, the domain (e.g. byweb.pt, that should
be divulged as www.byweb.pt).
Thus it is possible to understand that register a domain
is so important as register a brand. It is better to
remember that to register a brand in RNPC (National
Register of Collective People) does not assure the right
to an Internet domain register.
Some other important issues of registering a domain:
- Strengthen the enterprise image
- It is easier to remember www.myenterprise.pt than
www.myenterprise.server.pt or www.server.pt/~myenterprise
- The changing of the enterprise’s site to a
new server does not imply the need to do again the
enterprise’s stewardship and to inform the clients,
suppliers and friends of the new address.

What is lodgement?
Lodgement is a kind of service offered by some sites
and servers so that people connected to internet might
visit their website.
To say, for example, that your site is lodged on [byweb]
means that the site’s files were copied to byweb’s
computers, which are computers configured specifically
for that: to be acceded through internet by other computers
and allow to visualize the hosted pages by its public.
That kind of service is needed on the majority of cases,
because the costs to install and maintain a server and
an under-structure are very high.
